What are High Risk Medicines (HRM)?
“High-risk medicines were traditionally defined as medicines that have a high risk of causing injury or harm if they are misused or used in error. Error rates with these medications are not necessarily higher than with any other medicines, but when problems occur, the consequences can be more immediate and significant.”

Valproate has been used successfully in the management of bipolar disorder for many years. However, valproate is highly teratogenic with a risk of congenital malformations of approximately 11%. As a result, the Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency here in the United Kingdom has imposed strict regulations around the use of valproate in both male and female patients under 55 years of age.

Why is this platform needed?
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) requires that care home staff must only administer medicines if they have received proper training and are assessed as competent. Their knowledge, skills, and competencies must be reviewed annually.
Care home providers should try to use accredited learning providers for their learning and development programmes where possible.†
However, care home providers encounter numerous challenges in maintaining a skilled and competent workforce. A high staff turnover and persistent shortages, especially in medical and support roles, necessitate the frequent use of temporary and agency staff. This situation can potentially compromise the quality of services provided.††
